Urinetown, The Musical, satirizes the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, and municipal politics. The show also parodies musicals such as The Cradle Will Rock and Les Misérables, and the Broadway musical itself as a form. In reverse pantomime style, the unconventional plotline shatters audience expectations of a somewhat pleasant ending. The character of Bobby Strong was included on New York Theatre Monthly’s list of “The 100 Greatest Roles in Musical Theatre”.

Interesting WWII discoveries in the news this week!

It’s been a big week for WWII related news. Two discoveries have come to light, but they’re quite different.

First, we found out that 94-year-old man in Minnesota was once a top commander of the SS-led Ukrainian Self Defense Legion and later as an officer in the SS Galician Division. He’s now being investigated by both Polish and US officials. Read the story from the Huffington Post here.

Then, we heard that a possible escape tunnel was found under the site of the Sobibor death camp in Poland. Read that story from USA Today here.

Reading these stories adds even more depth to understanding the plight of the prisoners of concentration camps during the Holocaust and what people like the characters of “Bent” might have had to live through in real life.

“Bent” is a moving and heavy show. There are moments of levity, but it serves to educate us about this time in history and particularly what the homosexuals who were sent to concentration camps went through.

One of the audience members from Friday left us this message:

Congratulations to the cast and crew of the Dominion Stage production of “Bent.” It was an incredibly brave, and powerful, performance that punched a hole straight through my chest. Absolutely stunning.

Please join us for the final weekend of performances!

BENT by Martin Sherman

Directed by Shawn g. Byers
Produced by Amy Solo

The play revolves around the persecution of gays in Nazi Germany, and takes place during and after the Night of the Long Knives. The title of the play refers to the slang word “bent” used in some European countries to refer to homosexuals. When the play was first performed, there was only a trickle of historical research or even awareness about the Nazi persecution of homosexuals. In some regards, the play helped increase that historical research and education in the 1980s and 1990s.

Performance Dates:
Thursday, June 20 @ 8 pm
Friday, June 21 @ 8 pm
Saturday, June 22 @ 8 pm

Five Stars for Bent!

Bent opened last weekend to very receptive audiences and has already garnered us a five star review from DC Metro Theater Arts.

Dominion Stage’s Bent was an experience I will always remember. Sherman’s writing alone is brilliant, but Byers’ work brought the piece to life. The incredible power of the play never stopped building and based on the dead silence that met the end of the final scene, I can tell the audience would agree.

Check out the whole article here.

Today is the Anniversary of D-Day

69 years ago today American Soldiers landed on the beached of Normandy and began the Allied sweep of Europe in an effort to defeat Hitler.

It would be over a full month later before the first major concentration camp was discovered by Soviet soldiers. Many of the largest camps were not liberated until up to a year later in the spring and summer of 1945. Many of the inmates that had the pink triangle that meant that they were homosexuals had to return to prison after liberation took place.
