“I got made fun of a lot in grade school and became painfully shy as a result. My first audition (Evita) was petrifying but totally worth it, everyone I met was so warm and welcoming. Getting involved with the theater community was extremely liberating for me and really allowed me to become comfortable in my own skin.”
Spring Awakening is one of Ashley’s favorite musicals, because of the show’s strong alt–rock sound and more importantly, the message it presents.
“While there are certainly fun and comedic elements to the show, at its heart Spring Awakening deals with a number of issues that are very pertinent today. I strongly encourage parents to come see and discuss this show with their teens.“
Ashley’s character, Martha suffers frequent abuse in her home and bears her burden in relative silence.
“Options were very limited for young people in Martha’s position. While we have a wealth of resources today, many victims cannot bring themselves to speak of their experiences. Never assume you know what someone has been through. If you or a loved one is a victim of any form of abuse please try to confide in someone you trust, be it a parent, teacher, or friend, and know that there are resources available to help.”
