That’s What She Sang is a jukebox musical that is written and directed by Patrick M. Doneghy. It’s based around a gay men’s support group where, even though they are each very different than each other, they learn to help each other and themselves along the way. Emotions and laughs fly as the men discuss life, lust & love while bursting into songs traditionally sung by women of musical theatre.
Now that the show has opened to rave reviews (did ya see that DC Theatre Scene gave it 5 stars and called it “awe-inspiring”?), we thought you might want to get to know a few of the more obscure or lesser-known songs that are featured in the show. Today we’ll take a look at “Mean to Me” from Ain’t Misbehavin’. There are two women who are known for this song (amongst the other awesome divas who have taken it on) and they are Ella Fitzgerald and Nell Carter. Nell was in the show and rocked this beautiful song (much like our own Malcolm does in TWSS). Take a look at Miss Carter beltin’ it out!
